Ilam, Saleh Abad Cemetery

In the remote border area of Salehabad Cemetery in Ilam, a number of tombstones bear the names of prisoners executed during the 1988 massacre. The bodies of prisoners are buried next to each other in a trench. The families of these prisoners who opened these graves saw the bullet-riddled bodies of their loved ones wrapped in plastic bags.

In the years after the massacres, the authorities smashed the tombstones families erected over these graves. However in recent years, after this area was incorporated into the Saleh Abad Cemetery, they have allowed them to remain intact. However, visitors can still see that these graves are irregularly spaced and unusually close to each other.

To see the exact location of the mass grave, you need to zoom in.
